Canadian universities don't use a single unified grading scale nationwide โ instead, grading conventions differ by province and institution. While some universities use a standard 4.0 scale (similar to the US system), others use a 4.3 scale or even percentage-based grading averages. This calculator simplifies the process by letting you choose between the standard 4.0 scale and a 4.3 scale, computing a weighted average based on your course grades and credit hours.
The standard GPA formula is:
Suppose you took four courses on the standard 4.0 scale:
Calculation of grade-credit points: (4.0ร3) + (3.3ร3) + (3.7ร4) + (3.0ร3) = 12 + 9.9 + 14.8 + 9 = 45.7
Total credits: 3 + 3 + 4 + 3 = 13
Under the standard 4.0 scale, both an A and an A+ are awarded 4.0 grade points, which is the maximum score possible. On a 4.3 scale (used by schools like Simon Fraser University or Dalhousie University), an A is typically awarded 4.0 points, but an A+ is worth 4.3 points, allowing outstanding students to mathematically exceed a 4.0 average. If you're transferring or applying to graduate school, it's worth checking which scale your target institution uses, as they will often convert your transcript grades to their own scale.
