Most universities in Australia (including the prestigious Group of Eight) use a standard 7-point GPA scale, where a High Distinction (HD) corresponds to a perfect 7.0 and a Pass (P) is 4.0. Some institutions, however, calculate WAM (Weighted Average Mark) directly as a percentage average rather than a banded GPA. This calculator is designed for the standard 7.0 scale, helping you compute a credit-weighted average of your grade points.
The standard GPA formula is:
Suppose you took four subjects in a semester:
Calculation of grade-credit points: (7×6) + (6×6) + (5×12) + (4×6) = 42 + 36 + 60 + 24 = 162
Total credits: 6 + 6 + 12 + 6 = 30
While many Australian universities use the 7-point GPA scale, others (like the University of Melbourne, UNSW, or Monash) prioritize WAM. WAM is a simple credit-weighted average of your actual raw marks (e.g., 78% or 83%) rather than converting those marks to discrete grade points (like 6.0 or 7.0) first. This means two students with the same GPA could have slightly different WAMs, making WAM a more precise indicator of exact academic performance. This calculator computes GPA on the standard 7.0 scale.
